Explore the data to see how Chicago gets around by bike!

The Challenge

This year’s Divvy Data Challenge encouraged designers, developers, and scientists to visualize over 3.2 million Divvy trips in an insightful, beautiful, or creative way.

Winners:
Matthew Shaxted with a 3D visualization of 2014 Divvy trip data using curves to show hourly trips between stations and a chord diagram to show daily flow between neighborhoods.

Most Comprehensive
Winner: Abhinav Singh with a comparative look at trip trends and usage over time
Finalists:
Sean Reynolds and Daniel Nguyen with a graphic year in review of Divvy in 2014
Scott Presslak with an examination of Divvy's role as a mass transit system

Most Beautiful
Winner: Michael Freeman with a moving map that allows you to visualize Divvy trips, and lets you control the map to explore different visualizations.
Finalists:

Most Insightful
Winner:John Savage with an exploration of the effect weather had on ridership patterns in Chicago last year
Finalists:
Isaac Lambert with a comparison of "Long Rides" vs "Short Rides" and whether Members or 24-Hour Pass users are taking those rides.
Shaun Jacobsen with a look at which mode is faster: Divvy or public transport?

Most Creative
Winners: Dan Platt and Craig Booth with an application that was built using Quill, an artificial intelligence platform developed in Chicago, to write data-driven stories about Divvy in plain English
Finalists:
Sean Owiecki with an application that allows you to select a specific or random individual bike and visualize its journey through 2014
Tom Hogan with a riff on the traveling salesman problem, trying to visit all stations in as few miles as possible

Judging and Prizes

Winning entries in each category received:

  • An XBOX One
  • An XBOX Kinect
  • A Windows Phone
  • BizSpark software package including full-featured software development tools and server products Microsoft
  • Your entry featured in a full-page ad in RedEye and on the Divvy Website
  • Gift certificates for two Divvy Memberships
  • A Divvy t-shirt and five 24-Hour Passes to share with friends and family

Winners were selected for each of the following categories:

  • Best Overall Visualization:the entry that has the best overall aesthetics, provides insight, creatively illustrates the data, and is easy to understand.
  • Most Comprehensive:the entry that displays and shares the data most fully, while still being easy to understand.
  • Most Beautiful:the entry that is the most visually appealing in its illustration.
  • Most Creative:the entry that visualizes the data in the most new, different, and innovative way.
  • Most Insightful:the entry that reveals the most, or provides the most intelligent and surprising learnings from the trip data.

All entries will first be reviewed by a panel of Divvy judges, then narrowed down to a group of finalists. These finalist entries will be hosted on RedEyeChicago.com, where the public can cast a vote for their favorite visualizations.

The Data

Each trip is anonymized and includes:

  • Trip start day and time
  • Trip end day and time
  • Trip start station
  • Trip end station
  • Rider type (Member or 24-Hour Pass User)
  • If a Member trip, it will also include Member’s gender and year of birth
